Quarter Three 2007/08

Summary from the Target Champion

Due to problems with consistency in reporting for quarter two the requirement for quarter three reporting has been removed to allow time for DHBs to establish data collection with PHOs. Reporting will resume in quarter four.

Quarter Two 2007/08

Summary from the Target Champion

There are persistent challenges in increasing access to the Get Checked programme. More focused action will be needed to improve performance in this target area. Aware of these issues, the Ministry of Health and DHBs are working on a number of initiatives to get us all back on track towards meeting the national target by the end of the year. These include:
  • DHBs have been surveyed to seek suggestions for improvement, and have completed self-assessments as part of their District Annual Plans.
  • Facilitating cross-sector workshops.
  • Supporting an upgrade of information systems to improve the accuracy of information available to PHOs and DHBs.

Three other initiatives are expected to further improve results for the diabetes national targets. One is the Quality Improvement Plan (QIP). Launched in February, the QIP provides the health sector with a three-year plan to implement the priorities that will be nationally agreed and coordinated in order to improve health outcomes and the quality of care for people with cardiovascular disease and/or diabetes.

Secondly, the Ministry is presently negotiating the diabetes national health targets for 2008/09, and expects incremental and sustainable improvements. Third is the PHO Performance Programme, which is implementing performance-based payments for diabetes and cardiovascular disease indicators for 2008/09.

Quarter One 2007/08

Summary from the Target Champion

There is some very encouraging progress from the DHBs who are reporting on this target. However, a few DHBs now have an early indication that they are unlikely to meet their targets without making improvements. These improvements can still be implemented during the remainder of 2007/08.

Some DHBs have not yet made arrangements for quarterly reporting, and future national Health Target reports for diabetes will be increasingly comprehensive.
